Lab Grown Sperm Could Cure Male Infertility

Lab-grown sperm, also called in vitro spermatogenesis, is sperm produced from tissue samples in a laboratory setting rather than naturally within the body. While the Japanese breakthrough successfully created functional sperm in test tubes, the technology is still in research phases and not yet available for clinical use in the United States. The key advantage is that it can be generated from small tissue samples, offering hope for men with severely low sperm counts or no sperm production.

Since lab-grown sperm technology is not yet approved by the FDA or available through US fertility clinics, insurance coverage cannot be determined at this time. Currently, fertility insurance coverage varies widely by plan and state, with some treatments covered and others considered experimental. Once this technology becomes clinically available, coverage decisions will depend on FDA approval status and individual insurance policies.

For young male cancer patients, sperm-producing tissue could be harvested and frozen before chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which often damages fertility. After recovery from cancer treatment, this preserved tissue could potentially be used to generate healthy sperm in the laboratory, allowing men to father biological children. This approach is particularly valuable since it can work with frozen and thawed tissue samples, making it practical for fertility preservation protocols recommended by organizations like ASRM.

Lab-grown sperm is still in the research and development phase and is not yet available at US fertility clinics. Before becoming available, the technology must undergo extensive clinical trials and receive FDA approval, a process that typically takes several years. For young cancer patients, both approaches may be relevant—sperm freezing now and lab-grown sperm as a future option if the frozen tissue is later used to generate sperm.
